Blackle: save energy searching

My friend Roy showed me Blackle, which is Google set on a black background. They estimate we’d save 750 megawatt hours if Google used a black background, which takes less energy to display than white.

Funny thing is LCDs use more energy to display black. This will only save energy on CRTs. What’s more intriguing is the great marketing ploy to get users to use their site as a Google search box. I bet anything that they make cash off of every search made from their site.

That’s interesting. Looks like Blackle is full of crapple…sorry I made that joke.

…okay, well instead of starting a conversation about tactics in getting traffic (which Blackle totally is), we get one sentence replies that are just bad jokes. Sweet.

I was feeling a little slap happy that day. :)

It is a pretty smart tactic for driving traffic, and I bet they do make money off of the searches, which I hadn’t thought about when I posted about it.

If the logo didn’t make me cringe I might actually use it every once in a while. As it is that beveled logo is incredibly obnoxious. I was hoping for a well design google on a black background-but that is not this.

how to set Blackle as my home page?

From sumit on June 6th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

You might want to note that Blackle is just the first page of http://www.searchincolor.com, a site which has offered google search in color since a very long time. There are other color combinations on searchincolor which are energy saving..in general a dark background with light text-which are also energy saving and better than the standard white background.

I prefer using http://www.Darkoogle.com as their text are green which reduce eye strain. So instead of saving energy from our monitor, it also save our user’s eye energy.

Who knew there would be so many options for this!? :)

Here is another one. Opinion and search site. For those people who may find it uncomfortable reading light text on a black background. Greygle might be a better choice for them. It uses a grey background with dark text which they might find easier to read. Also, for those silly simple things, it has a stupid thought, which changes from day to day, seemingly related to grey under its logo.

What say you about all of this?
