Naming your divs
When I first started designing with standards, I used to name some of my ids and classes things like “FloatLeft” and “BlueText”. It wasn’t long before I discovered the problem with using names that indentified with style. For example, if I decided later that I wanted my element to float right instead of left then I either had to rename everything or just be confused.
My friend Ben has recently come to the same realization and has decided to take a unique approach to solving the problem. His elements will now be named Sally, Rahid, Estella, and the like. I hear him saying things like, “Come on, Jack. Move to the left just a little for Daddy.” And, Ruth will always be a name because that is his grandma’s name. Awwww, ain’t that cute. ;)

ben? there can only be one.

Seems pretty silly to me. Why wouldn’t you name them based on the content? That way you can always and quickly remember exactly what each div is, and where you want it. I can understand not naming them by style, but giving them first names seems even more confusing… as well as a little “Hey look, I’m a crazy web guy. I ride a skateboard at work.” However, I’m not a famous web developer, so what do I know?

Anon: It’s not practical or recommended. It did make me smile a little though. :)
