Surf Sessions - Squid has a cool blog
So tonight had a great time on a Saturday night just surfing the Internet. Tonight I had a few realizations.
- Surfing the Internet is better than T.V.
- I should start memorializing some of the cool shit that I find while I’m surfing to share it with others.
- I should just start posting this information in a blog, specifically my blog on MySpace.
- I like Snow Patrol.
- I found some great shit on Squid’s blog (the DJ from 94.7fm).
So, I’m going to start posting regularly about my finds from surf sessions. Then you can use these posts to supplement your surfing. My hope is that you’ll starting surfing for cool shit and then share it with me. Then we can subscribe to each others RSS feed and totally get our geek on. Oh my. I can’t believe I just typed that.
Here’s what I found:
*** http://www.culturebully.com, http://www.myspace.com/culturebully
It’s a Minneapolis-based music blog. One thing I like about their web presence is that they have a lot of options to spread their posts through social bookmarking, link submission, and more. They appear to have a solid grasp on the social web as they have a MySpace profile as well. Good signs that they are plugged into what’s happening on the Internet, which adds to their street cred in my world. Plus on the post I mention below, the author asked the readers if they knew a song title and they got a correct answer, which is a good sign of a healthy interactive relationship and speaks highly to their viability as a source for good music knowledge. I think this blog is worth checking out.
What I found on there were MP3s to all of the songs from a Raconteurs appearance at Lollapalooza. They do a cool cover of the Gnarls Barkley song Crazy.

This was a pretty cool find. A culture jamming artist Banksy placed 500 altered copies of Paris Hilton’s CD in 40 stores across the UK. According to Squid’s blog, some were selling on eBay for $1,200.

Turns out DJ Squid at 94.7 fm has a pretty cool blog. In fact, that’s where I found my links above. I’ll be adding him to my RSS feed.
I had a bit of a I live in the future moment today when I wanted to hear a song, once I remembered it was called Chasing Cars, I googled the song name, found the band’s name was Snow Patrol, guessed they would have a MySpace profile at myspace.com/snow patrol, sure enough they did have a profile and the song Chasing Cars was ..1 on their music player. And, it was the whole song. I knew bands had their music on MySpace, but this was the first time I realized that I could call up the song I wanted to listen to legally for free on the Internet. Radio stations used to have to pay royalties for playing music, but those days are over.

[...] I’m always looking for new tricks to add to my bag of promotions, so I decided to install their toolbar, which is when my problem began. The problem is that StumbleUpon is really cool and is sucking away hours of my time. I’ve tried surfing the internet in the same way I watch T.V., but I could never decide to start a surf session—it just had to happen, like finding a great new blog full of cool links or happening to hit a new topic vein. I know some people visit sites like Digg, BoingBoing, Fark; but they don’t inspire surfing for me. [...]
